LENS CLASSIFICATION
SR
1958-66
The first lens series introduced along with the SR-2 in 1958 were pre-set lenses without automatic diaphragm (or any other linkage to the camera body). These lenses have a second, non-clicking diaphragm ring (silver on lenses of 135mm and shorter, black on longer lenses; both grey on the 600mm 1:5.6) to quicker open up and stop down the aperture. Some of the lenses were soon replaced with AUTO ROKKOR versions, others were later introduced budget lenses (like the 100mm and 135mm 1:4 lenses) or special lenses (like the 1966 18mm 1:9.5). The short lived 250mm 1:4 went out of production soon and the TELE ROKKOR-PG 135mm 1:2.8 was replaced by the AUTO ROKKOR version, the 35mm 1:4, 100mm 1:4 and 135mm 1:4 stayed for years in the line up as budget options. The 600mm 1:5.6, the 1000mm 1:6.3 and the 100-200mm 1:5.6 were listed until the early 70s. Early editions have yellow LV numbers engraved. The front ring engraving obeyed the following pattern:
M I N O L T A         T E L E   R O K K O R - P G         1 : 2 . 8     f = 1 3 5 m m       1 2 3 4 5 6 7
The "LENS MADE IN JAPAN" engraving (engraved only on early subeditions, filled with white color on later ones) moved to the front ring on late editions:
MINOLTA       LENS MADE IN JAPAN       ROKKOR-TC       1:4     f=135mm       1234567
The two letters follwing the Rokkor name coded the optical construction of the lens. The first letter indicated the number of the lens groups:

AR I
1958-60
Early AUTO ROKKOR lenses, introduced in 1958 with the SR-2. With this line, the automatic diaphragm was introduced. If it's fully auto (re-opening directly after exposure) or semi-auto (diaphragm opens by operating film transport lever) is a feature of the camera, not the lens. To enable this, a small lever protruding into the camera was added, which is mounted on a rotating ring on lenses of 100mm and shorter. The first lens of this series was the 55mm 1:1.8 standard lens of the SR-2, accompanied by the 100mm 1:3.5 soon. A bit later came the 35mm 1:2.8 and in 1959 with the SR-1 the 55mm 1:2. All of these lenses have yellow LV numbers engraved and an aperture lock, a small lever, which has to be pushed to change the setting (not so the 135mm lenses). Significant are the uneven spaced and often misaligned F-stop engravings on the aperture ring. Subeditions can be distinguished by the "LENS MADE IN JAPAN" engraving, and in case of the standard lens, by presence and scope of half stops. These early AUTO ROKKOR lenses feature the long travel diaphragm mechanism of the SR-2, SR-3 and the first four editions of SR-1. Smallest aperture is 22 on all AR I lenses. The front ring up to 100mm lenses is chrome outside to take the clamp-on lens shades. Front ring engraving:

AR II
1961-64
Second type of AUTO ROKKOR lenses, introduced with the third edition of SR-1 in April 1961. Overall appearance did not change, but the diaphragm mechanism. At first glance the evenly spaced F-stop engravings on the aperture ring stands out. The new design has a much shorter travel of the diaphragm lever and it now sticks out of a window of the base plate on the back of the lens. Since the SR-1 now featured a new fully automatic diaphragm mechanism (as well as the second edition of SR-3), which re-opened instantly after exposure, the DOF could not be checked any more with the old lenses. So the aperture lock was dropped and a stop down lever was added instead. Lenses shorter than 100mm now came with a smallest F-stop of 16. From July 1962 with the introduction of the SR-7 (and fifth edition of SR-1 - both now featuring the short travel diaphragm mechanism in the camera), the LV numbers were dropped. At the end of that era, the "LENS MADE IN JAPAN" engraving moved to the front ring:

AR C (SR C)
1965-67
In 1965 a compact series was introduced, which brought some cosmetical changes anticipating later MC design. The front ring went black, showing the transition to screw-in lens shades. Likewise the marks for F-stop and distance - so far a dot and a triangle - were combined to a diamond shaped index. Also, the stop down lever was swapped against a tiny disc like pusher. And following the meaning of a compact series, dimensions and weight were reduced (not so with the 35mm 1:4) and brought a 52mm filter thread (only the 135mm 1:2.8 kept the 55mm). The 'official' compact series consisted of six lenses (35mm 1:2.8 and 1:4, 55mm 1:1.8, 58mm 1:1.4, 100mm 1:3.5 and 135mm 1:2.8), but since all these changes took place with the 55mm 1:2 as well, I decided to include it (this lens was available bundled with the SR-1V, SR-7V and SR-1s only, so that's why it's not listed in the accessory guides). The same applies to the 45mm 1:2.8, which was a veritable AUTO ROKKOR lens, though named only ROKKOR-TD (and was oddly enough sold in separate versions with m and ft scale). The 53mm 1:2 is sort of a intermediate lens, but since it has a chrome front ring, I assigned it to the AR II line.
MC I
1966-69
The 1966 introduced famous Minolta SR-T 101 featured a TTL metering with the diaphragm wide open. To simulate the pre-set F-stop in the meter readout in the viewfinder, a small tab was added to the aperture ring - often referred as "MC tab". These meter-coupled lenses were named accordingly MC Rokkor lenses, and so changed the front engraving:
MINOLTA       LENS MADE IN JAPAN       MC TELE ROKKOR-PF       1:2.8     f=135mm       1234567
The most eye-catching attribute of this new lens line was the silver aperture ring. Most of the AR II and AR C lenses were adopted without bigger cosmetical or optical changes. Although the SR-T featured a stop down lever, the lenses kept their own stop down levers as a more tiny version. Only the standard lenses had originally no such lever, but with the introduction of the SR-1s in 1967 (which had no built-in stop down functionality), some batches of standard lenses with stop down lever were produced. At a point Minolta began to engrave the focal lenght in mm in glaring orange letters equidistant right and left from the DOF scale. So early lenses mostly exist with and without the engraving. In comparison to its successors, the focussing grip of the MC I lenses was longer, so this series is sometimes referred as "long grip" or, referring to look, "flat grip". Noteworthy new lens designs in MC I were the 28mm 1:2.5, the 35mm 1:1.8, the legendary 58mm 1:1.2 and a new 300mm 1:4.5
MC II
1967-72
This lens series features a new focussing grip, but is else unchanged to its predecessor. The new focusing grip has the serrated sections formed concave, so that they form a "valley" between to "hills". This lead to the german name "Berg und Tal", in the anglophone region it's usually called "knurled grip". Since the grip section is considerably shorter than with the MC I series, its also called "short grip". Further the focal lenght marking on the barrel was shifted, so the right marking was placed next to the DOF scal, with the other beeing placed on the opposite site. Everything else stayed the same, only the 135mm and the 200mm lenses received a small tuning: their aperture ring was placed at the bayonet mount. Although the first lens with the new grip was introduced in 1967, the MC Macro Rokkor-QF 50mm 1:3.5, the majority of the MC II lenses was introduced around 1969. Minolta's R&D kept on being very busy, and developed exciting new lenses like the worlds first fullframe fish-eye 16mm 1:2.8, the 21mm 1:2.8 and the 85mm 1:1.7. In the north american market, the SR-T 100 was introduced in 1971 and it was bundled with an extraordinary 55mm 1:1.9 lens: it featured as a first timer a rubber coating on the focussing grip (different from the later MC-X style), got only a ft scale and the serial was engraved at the outside of the filter ring, but not painted white. The 24mm 1:2.8 was announced, but it came later as a MC-X lens.
MC-X
1973-76
At the Photokina in September of 1972 Minolta presented a new milestone camera: The X-1, which was marketed as XK in USA and Canada and XM in Europe and elsewhere. With this new professional grade auto exposure camera, a brand new and modern lens line was introduced. The new lenses now featured a rubberized focussing grip and since the upcoming cameras had a finder read out of the aperture, the aperture ring was black. This was a biggest change in the design of the Minolta lenses so far, and it was kept until the end. Lenses for the north american market got the appendix '-X' right after the ROKKOR name on the front marking, colored in bright orange:
MINOLTA       LENS MADE IN JAPAN       MC TELE  ROKKOR-X  PF       1:2.8     f=135mm       1234567
Lenses with 52mm filter thread became 55mm and now the standard lenses got the focal length marking on the barrel, too. The very early samples still had the bayonet index painted in red color, but soon the series was equipped with the small well known red plastic bead. Later Minolta started dropping the two letter optical code on the front ring engraving:
MINOLTA       LENS MADE IN JAPAN       MC TELE ROKKOR           1:2.8     f=135mm       1234567
MINOLTA       LENS MADE IN JAPAN       MC TELE ROKKOR-X       1:2.8     f=135mm       1234567
Finally the small stop down lever was left out on late lenses of this series. Althogh showcased in late 1972, it took until early 1973 that the first MC-X lenses became available. A big innovation was the change to a standard focal length of 50mm. Again Minolta raised the bar with new lens designs, like the circular fish-eye 7.5mm 1:4, the apochromatic 400mm 1:5.6, the huge 800mm and 1600mm 1:8 mirror lenses, or special lenses like the VFC 24mm 1:2.8 and the shift 35mm 1:2.8. The weird 40-80mm 1:2.8 zoom was a lens of that era, as well as the huge 100-500mm 1:8 tele zoom. Other highly regarded lenses were the 24mm 1:2.8 and the 28mm 1:2. The SR-T 100 was introduced in Europe in 1974, two years after the USA, and again equipped with a special lens: The 50mm 1:2. Like its sister lens, the MC II 55mm 1:1.9, it had the serial engraved at outside of the filter ring, but this time painted white. It featured a regular m and ft scale and was the first lens to get a plastic aperture ring (in its last edition).
MD I
1977
When Minolta introduced the XD with its shutter priority exposure mode, the camera needed to know the minimum F stop of the lens - the MD tab was born. The new series was named MD Rokkor, and thus the front engraving changed:
MINOLTA       LENS MADE IN JAPAN       MD TELE ROKKOR           1:2.8     f=135mm
The lenses for the north american market kept their orange Rokkor-X designation:
MINOLTA       LENS MADE IN JAPAN       MD TELE ROKKOR-X       1:2.8     f=135mm
The serial number was no longer present on the front ring, it was now located on the lens barrel closed to the bayonet mount, on the bottom side. Further, the smallest aperture was changed from 16 to 22 on most lenses. The focal length marking opposite to DOF scale was dropped and Minolta started to color the smallest F-stop green. The aperture itself was changed from a metal ring to a plastic ring. The standard lens had the plastic ring right from the beginning, others swapped it in the MD I or in the MD II era. Of the MC-X line were all lenses adopted to MD I, but the 21mm 1:2.8 and the 200mm 1:3.5. The first was replaced by the 20mm 1:2.8, which was along with the 500mm 1:8 mirror lens the only new design in MD I, the latter got a successor in MD II with the 200mm 1:2.8. Some lenses strangely never got the MD I update, and were kept as MC-X and upgraded to MD II: the 35mm 1:1.8, the 85mm 1:1.7, the 300mm 1:5.6, the Macro 100mm 1:3.5 and the 24-50mm 1:4 zoom lens.
MD II
1978-80
The MD II series was in the beginning just a very small cosmetical upgrade concerning the front ring. The notation of the focal length now lacked the "f=" and swapped places with the aperture, as well as the filter thread diameter was added and the "LENS MADE IN JAPAN" was relocated:
MINOLTA       MD TELE ROKKOR           135mm     1:2.8       LENS MADE IN JAPAN     Ø55mm
The lenses produced for USA and Canada were still called Rokkor-X:
MINOLTA       MD TELE ROKKOR-X       135mm     1:2.8       LENS MADE IN JAPAN     Ø55mm
Since the MD I series of 1977 was just a mechanical and slight cosmetical upgrade to the MC-X series, Minolta started in 1978 with the modernisation of its lens line. Most of the lenses adopted from MD I were later replaced by smaller and lighter constructions, often optically revised, too. Lenses with a 55mm filter thread got in many cases a 49mm thread and the ring containing the DOF scale, next to the aperture ring, once flat, became tapered. New lens designs that came with MD II were the 45mm 1:2 almost-pancake budget standard lens, the 50mm 1:1.2, the 85mm 1:2 and Varisoft 85mm 1:2.8, the tele lenses 200mm 1:2.8, the 300mm 1:4.5 with internal focussing, the 600mm 1:6.3 and the 12.5mm, 25mm, 50mm and 100mm bellows lenses. The likewise new 250mm 1:5.6 mirror lens interestingly never got a MD III update, as well as the 300mm 1:5.6, although they were listed for years. At the end of the era, the Rokkor-X lost its orange color:
MINOLTA       MD TELE ROKKOR-X        135mm     1:2.8       LENS MADE IN JAPAN     Ø55mm
MD III
1981-84
MD III came in mid 1981 with the introduction of the Minolta X-700 and it's P-mode. To lock the smallest aperture, a little pusher was added to the aperture ring. Further most lenses from ultra wide to short tele were made to the same diameter. The rubber waffle of the focussing grip became finer, the mounting index became larger and the feet scale changed from green to amber. The diamond shaped F-stop-focus-index was replaced by a straight line. The focal length marking on the barrel now lacked the "mm" and went next to the mounting index. Most lenses between 28mm and 135mm got a new 49mm filter thread, and the front ring featured a tiny groove all around, to take the new clip-in lens shades. Minolta got the new "rising sun" logo and decided to drop the Rokkor name. So the new front engraving was very reduced:
MINOLTA       MD       135mm     1:2.8       JAPAN     Ø55mm
Minolta called this lens line "New MD" (N-MD). Due to the lack of the Rokkor name, it's often called "plain MD" among collectors.
MD IIIa
1985-96
In 1985 Minolta began to sell some low budget zoom lenses, propably built by supplier. They were optically and mechanically considerably below Minolta standards, had no aperture lock, no engravings, no plastic bead. The death of the manual focussing Minolta system was looming on the horizon.
MC CELTIC
1972-75
Minolta started this low budget lens line, which was sold in North America only, in 1972 with a single lens, the 135mm 1:3.5. This lens look pretty much like it's MC II sister with a MC I style focussing grip and it lacked the meter scale. The lens line introduced in 1974 had a rubber coating, but different from the MC-X edition. It consisted of the most popular lenses between 28mm and 200mm. The lenses were cheaper built and had simplier coatings.

Leitz
In 1972 Minolta and Leitz made a contract to share know-how, patents and products. Thus Leitz lenses were included in the Minolta system, but they were available through Leitz dealers only. The bellows Photare with their RMS mount were fitted via the M-Adapter, the mighty Telyt was equipped with a SR bayonet.
